A backlink is a link from an external website to another site. Such links can help users discover additional sources and help search engines find pages and understand relationships between content. Editorially justified links from a relevant context are generally the most meaningful.

The raw number of backlinks is not a useful quality objective. Purchased, automated, or manipulative link patterns may violate search engine policies. Sustainable link acquisition is more likely to result from citable content, useful tools, genuine partnerships, public relations, and recognised expertise.
