Google AI Overviews: how they work and SEO basics
Editorially reviewed ·
Clear definition
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries in Google Search that may synthesise information and provide supporting links for suitable queries. They do not appear for every search. Google may use multiple related searches and data sources to address parts of a complex question. Selection, presentation, and supporting links can vary.
To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a search snippet. Google specifies no additional technical requirements or dedicated structured-data type for AI Overviews. Established SEO fundamentals and helpful, reliable, people-first content remain relevant. Traffic from AI Overviews is included in Search Console under the Web search type rather than reported separately.
AI Overview in practice
AI Overviews summarise information directly in Google results and may include links to sources. Availability and composition vary; there is no guaranteed optimisation method or fixed position.
AI-assisted search interfaces select, summarise, and cite information through their own processes. No technical marker can guarantee a mention. Clearly named topics, traceable authorship, current facts, accessible pages, and consistent information across reliable sources are useful foundations. Measurement needs to distinguish classic results, AI outputs, and actual website traffic.
AI Overview: relevance to SEO, paid search, and GEO
New search presentations change click paths but not the need for trustworthy sources. Technical SEO, clear entities, internal linking, and helpful content remain foundational. Paid-search data can reveal demand and language, but paid placement does not guarantee an organic mention in an AI answer. Success should therefore be evaluated through several signals rather than a supposed AI ranking score.
For search and answer systems, coverage of AI Overview should distinguish its definition, scope, and evaluation criteria. The editorial reference is “AI features and your website” by Google Search Central, making central claims traceable for readers and machine-based systems.
