Is Instagram now good for my SEO?
Instagram content will soon become visible in search engines – what does that mean for your SEO and how can you use it strategically?
What changes from July 2025?
Instagram has announced that public posts from professional accounts can appear in external search engines like Google starting July 10, 2025.
This applies to reels, photos and videos published since January 1, 2020 – provided your profile is set to “professional” and you actively allow indexing.
Benefits for your visibility
- Your Instagram posts can appear directly in Google search results.
- You strengthen your brand presence beyond Instagram.
- With strong content, you can attract additional visitors to your website.
- Reels and posts may appear in Google carousels.
But beware: not a replacement for real SEO
Instagram remains a third-party platform. You have no control over structured data, meta tags or crawl depth. Google usually shows previews or reels – not a full crawl of your account.
How to use it properly
- Make sure you are using a professional Instagram account.
- Enable the option “Allow public content to appear in search engines” in your settings.
- Use clear keywords in your captions, e.g. “Massage Augsburg” or “Custom web design”.
- Place a strong link in your bio, for example to a campaign landing page.
- Publish high-quality, local content regularly with recognizable branding.
If you do not want your Instagram profile to appear on Google
Not everyone wants their content to be visible outside of Instagram – for example with personal topics or sensitive projects. Fortunately, you can prevent this deliberately.
How to do it:
- Open Instagram and go to Settings → Privacy.
- Find the option “Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results”.
- Disable the toggle – your content will remain outside Google & other search engines.
Note: This only affects professional accounts with public content. Private accounts or personal profiles without this setting are not affected – they do not appear in external search results anyway.
Conclusion
From July 2025, Instagram will become a new visibility channel in search engines – but not a replacement for your website or proper Google rankings. Used strategically, it can help you build reach and strengthen your brand presence on Google.
