WordPress vs. Wix – which is the better fit for your website?

When it comes to choosing the right system, many people think of WordPress or Wix – but which one actually fits your project? Both promise an easy setup, but behind the scenes they represent two completely different approaches. And the decision has a direct impact on technology, design flexibility, extensibility, and long-term control.
In this post, I’ll show you the key differences – practical, honest, and with a clear recommendation on when each system makes sense.
Open system or website builder: how much do you want to control yourself?
WordPress is an open-source system – it runs on your own hosting, for example with all-inkl.com. You have full access to code, database, and files. That means: you decide what is technically possible. I can, for example, write custom plugins, build individual features, and work completely freely on design.
Wix, on the other hand, is a closed website builder. You log in via browser, pick a template, adjust text and colors – done. Simple, but: you can’t edit the code, you can’t use external hosting, and you remain tied to the platform long-term.
Design & usability: how flexible should it be?
Wix is built for fast design. The editor works directly in the browser and is very visual – drag & drop, colors, spacing, font sizes – everything is clickable. Ideal for small websites or beginners.
WordPress can feel more technical at first. With the Gutenberg editor or tools like Elementor, visual editing is also possible – but with significantly more depth. And: the design can be fully customized or even built from scratch.
Extensibility & features
Wix is clearly limited. There is an app market, but many functions – especially for SEO, tracking, or multilingual setups – are only available in a limited form or require additional paid options.
With WordPress, extensibility is almost unlimited. There are over 60,000 free plugins – from small features to complete shop systems. And if something doesn’t exist? No problem – I can build it for you.
Costs: invest once or rent monthly?
Wix is subscription-based – depending on the plan, you pay between 10€ and 30€ per month. Hosting, SSL, email, etc. are included.
WordPress itself is basically free. You only need hosting (e.g. all-inkl.com from around 5€/month). What you save on monthly subscription fees, you invest in more freedom and flexibility.
Who is which system better for?
| Target group | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Beginners with no technical knowledge | Wix – fast, easy, clearly limited |
| Design-focused solo entrepreneurs | Wix or WordPress with a builder |
| SEO- and privacy-critical projects | WordPress – technically flexible & GDPR-friendly |
| Agencies & scalable websites | WordPress – more control & extensible |
| Shops & complex features | WordPress – e.g. with WooCommerce |
My conclusion
Wix is good for anyone who wants to get online quickly – without major demands for technology, SEO, or customization.
WordPress is ideal if you want to stay independent long-term, need features beyond standard functionality, or value technical control.
I often work with WordPress – especially when it’s about custom designs, own plugins, or flexible extensions. Depending on the project, I also use TYPO3 or my own CMS when it makes more sense structurally or technically. For me, the key is always the same: the solution has to fit the project and the people behind it.
Not sure which system you need?
I help you decide – honestly, technically sound, and focused on your goals.
