WordPress launches an AI team – what it means for us

WordPress has officially launched its own AI Team. And that’s a big step – because AI is no longer just tolerated or tested informally, but actively developed in a structured way and on core level.
The idea: instead of dozens of developers building separate AI plugins, WordPress consolidates efforts. There is now a central team working on AI projects – from planning to implementation to potential integration into core. As always, the process is open and community-driven.
Canonical plugins instead of endless waiting
Especially interesting: the approach is “plugin-first”. That means new AI features will be built as official so-called canonical plugins first – independent from the major WordPress release cycle. This allows ideas to be tested quickly, improved and, if successful, merged into core later.
The team includes people from Automattic, Google and 10up – developers with deep WordPress expertise. A public roadmap has been announced; meetings and discussions run openly via the #core-ai channel.
What does this mean for us?
I think this step is overdue. AI will play a major role – for content creation, image editing, accessibility or automated workflows. If WordPress develops these capabilities inside its ecosystem, it means more stability, better standards and long-term benefits for clients.
